The Northern Maine Pioneers took to the ice at the Presque Isle Forum on Monday afternoon for a special Veterans Day matchup against the St. Stephen Moose. With no school and the stands filled with a great hometown crowd, fans were treated to an exciting high-energy game from start to finish.
The Moose came out strong with two quick early goals in the first to take the lead, but the Pioneers didn’t back down. They rallied together, tightened up on defense, and began to control the pace of the game.
Midway through the first, Grant Matushak (#8) put the Pioneers on the board, burying a shot off a perfect setup from Gavin Elkins (#11) to shift the momentum their way.
The second period was all offense. Elkins (#11) returned the favor with a goal assisted by G. Matushak (#8), followed by Hudson Maro (#14) finding the back of the net off a feed from Tal Reuven (#28). Grant Levins (#33) then added another tally with help from Kellen Matushak (#7), extending the lead. The Moose did score a third goal in the period but the Pioneers continued to control the tempo.
The third period opened with a special moment, twin brothers Grant and Kellen Matushak connected for a goal, with K. Matushak (#7) scoring off assists from G. Matushak (#8) and Jacob Heron (#9) to keep the momentum rolling. To cap things off, Tyler Jarvis (#18) buried another goal with assists from EJ Goveia (#32) and Grant Levins (#33), sealing the game.
Down 2–0 early, the gritty and composed Pioneers battled back on home ice for a 6–3 win. It was truly a full-team effort that showed depth, determination, and chemistry from the Pioneers.
