The Northern Maine Pioneers opened their weekend with a high-energy home matchup on Friday night as they welcomed the Connecticut Chiefs to The Forum for their first meeting of the season. The Chiefs struck first, putting early pressure on the Pioneers, but Northern Maine quickly responded. #13 Ward tied the game at 7:58, finishing a smooth play set up by the Matushak twins, #7 K. Matushak and #8 G. Matushak. Momentum continued to build as the Pioneers generated sustained offensive pressure, and just under two minutes later, #33 Levins gave Northern Maine the lead with a goal at 9:36, assisted by #24 Hughes and #12 Culbertson. The Pioneers carried the tempo and physicality through the remainder of the period, setting the tone for a competitive night.
In the second period, both teams traded quality chances, with the Pioneers producing several strong opportunities but unable to break through. The Chiefs managed to even the score, and despite a determined defensive effort, the Pioneers entered the third period in a tight battle. Northern Maine continued to push, creating traffic in front and keeping pressure in the offensive zone, but the Chiefs regained the lead late. A final empty-net goal sealed a 4–2 result, though the Pioneers maintained intensity throughout all three periods.
The team quickly regrouped on Saturday as they traveled to the Biddeford Ice Arena for a rematch. The Chiefs built a 2–0 lead in the first period and added another in the second, but the Pioneers continued to compete with strong defensive adjustments and improved puck management. Their persistence paid off late in the third when #9 Heron made a clean setup that found #33 Levins, who scored at 56:20 to put Northern Maine on the board. The Pioneers generated several pushes but ultimately fell short in a 3–1 final.
Despite the scores, the weekend showcased exceptional goaltending. On Friday, #1 Shiyanov faced a heavy 50-shot workload and turned aside 43, surrendering only three goals against him with the fourth scored on an empty net. He finished with an impressive .939 save percentage, keeping the Pioneers competitive throughout the night. On Saturday, #35 Kolari continued the strong play in net, stopping 34 shots and posting a .919 save percentage, standing tall against consistent pressure.
The Pioneers now look ahead to a busy weekend at home. They will host the Chiefs once again on Friday night at 7:15, before returning to The Forum on Saturday at 6:15 for another high-intensity rematch against the St. Stephen Moose.
