This past weekend, the Northern Maine Pioneers hit the road for the South Shore Kings Presidents Day Showcase, taking on the Springfield Pics, Worcester Railers, and Boston Jr. Bruins in a competitive three-game slate. The weekend tested the group’s depth and resilience, but the Pioneers continued to show their work ethic and determination every time they hit the ice.
The showcase opened Saturday evening as the Pioneers faced the Springfield Pics. The starting six featured #21 Alex Fiore (LW), #20 Anton Strandberg (C), #24 Evan Hughes (RW), #10 Matt McCarron (LW), #27 Thomas Leverett (RW), and #1 Murat Shiyanov (G). From puck drop, the Pioneers brought energy and physicality, establishing pressure early and battling in all three zones. Springfield was able to capitalize on an early opportunity to take a 1–0 lead into the first intermission. Despite the deficit, the Pioneers continued to generate chances and push the pace. The Pics extended their lead with two second-period goals and added another in the third. Refusing to quit, the Pioneers responded immediately after Springfield’s fourth goal. Just nine seconds later, #9 Jacob Heron found #23 Liam Schaentzler, who quickly set up #16 Canon Gough for a strong finish to get Northern Maine on the board. Shiyanov stood tall in net, turning aside 29 of 33 shots and keeping the Pioneers within reach throughout the contest.
On Sunday, the Pioneers returned to the Foxboro Sports Center to take on the Worcester Railers. The starting unit consisted of #8 David Artenosi (LW), #23 Liam Schaentzler (C), #11 Cloutier (RW), #10 Matt McCarron (LD), #27 Thomas Leverett (RD), and #35 Julius Kolari (G). The game was tightly contested from the start, with both teams trading chances in a fast-paced first period. Worcester broke through late in the frame with under two minutes remaining, but the Pioneers’ defensive structure remained strong. The second period highlighted Northern Maine’s resilience, as Kolari shut the door and the defense limited quality opportunities, keeping it a one-goal game heading into the third. The Pioneers pushed to find the equalizer in the final period, generating pressure and continuing to battle along the boards. Worcester added two late goals, resulting in a 3–0 final. Kolari delivered a solid performance between the pipes, stopping 31 of 34 shots.
On the final day of the showcase, the Pioneers squared off against the Boston Jr. Bruins, currently second in their league. The lineup featured #1 Murat Shiyanov (G), #3 Daniel Raskin (LD), #9 Jacob Heron (RD), #8 David Artenosi (LW), #13 Simon Ward (C), and #16 Canon Gough (RW). The first period showcased disciplined defensive play and strong goaltending on both sides, ending scoreless. The Jr. Bruins managed to break through late in the second period, but the Pioneers continued to compete shift after shift. Following a goaltender change to #35 Julius Kolari in the third, Northern Maine pushed hard to even the score. Despite sustained effort and intensity, Boston added a second goal midway through the final frame to secure the win. Shiyanov made 22 saves on 23 shots over two periods, while Kolari stopped 8 of 9 shots in the third.
Although the results didn’t fall in their favor, the showcase provided valuable experience against strong competition. The Pioneers demonstrated grit, teamwork, and a refusal to back down, qualities that will continue to define this group as they head into the final stretch of the season.
The Pioneers return home this Saturday for their Pink the Rink game against the Woodstock Slammers before heading back on the road Sunday to take on the Lewiston MAINEiacs.
